Anyone who s even bothered knows that there s not a single day that goes by without a myriad things making it into the headlines when it comes to tech, so bear with me will I do a shabby attempt at summarizing what I would consider the prominent bits (ergo consider this a valid conversation check list for your first morning of the week at the office water break )

Google glitches

Gmail slows down to a crawl, Gmail admits to the fault naming a latency issue found on one of its datacenters which would affect 2% of its user base (4 million people approximately).

Google voice scrambles and dies out for a few hours, no official reason given so far (feel free to correct me on this one).

Google employee files sexual harassment claim against twitter employee.

On the bright side the Google Android OS reaches three years of age this week, blows its cake’s candles wishing to retain the market share superiority over IOS.

In your Facebook

Gmail slams the door on Facebook’ s face claiming a need for reciprocity, it effectively blocks Facebook’ s ability to fetch friends thru Gmail alleging a lack of response from Facebook to follow suit on sharing the info ; in plain terms what Gmail is asking for is dead simple: “if you want to import my data to your platform, you better start letting me do the same”.

This may seem harsh to the naked eye but a closer look at the situation reveals that most users seem to be oblivious to the fact that you simply can’t export friend lists to (your favorite online communication service here).

Although targeted at Facebook, the move comes in the form of an alteration to the terms of service for Gmail s contact API and applies from now on to any third party wanting to liaison with Gmail

Congress got into a little chitchat with Facebook about privacy of user data, due to alleged reports of leaks of personal information to third parties.

This spurs from a single media article of a company that notwithstanding has commercial common dependencies with myspace, which just matter of fact re-re-launched itself in an attempt to not crash and burn.

In the mean time, Facebook launches a line of Facebook “credits”, virtual currency to be used within its apps and games, which you can purchase in meat space.

Skyfire Backfires

The by now übber famous, misleadingly branded “Flash player for IDevices” (for my take on why I think the assertion is misleading check this link) Skyfire debuts; the success of the apps offering mixed with its resource dependency forces its makers to pull the plug on the downloads  barely 5 hours after launch.

Since, they have used a drop counter approach to commercializing the app, enabling downloads for limited periods of time, while scaling the server clusters needed to provide the service  accordingly. Nothing like castrating the potential clients to provide a fulfilling user experience.

Tablet Galore

Everyone and their dog is taking on the tablet format in an attempt to grab a piece of the iPad action, even Kindle who stubbornly insists they aren’t in the same market as the iPad got a suspiciously tablet looking product, the Nook color, out on the shelves, other offerings include models from mostly all mayor computer hardware manufacturers, with assorted dimensions and operating systems.

One has to wonder why did they all have to wait on Apple, having all the tech already available, and after pondering on the issue for some time, the only conclusion is that Apple has become the only company capable of knowing if its own products are cool, before launch, granted, there were some half decent attempts before, but they all failed from lack of support from their own companies, Apple stands its ground behind all its products. It’s like all the other companies started looking like gnu s on a river crossing, waiting for someone else to get their caskets wet first.

Social Money

Within the craze for monetizing on the Social Media, the consensus so far is quite clear: “we don’t know how exactly, but the money is there”, this comes as the last stand for advertising companies to try to turn away from the unavoidable, mainly that in social media, consumers are not the target, but the enabling  component of successful promotion, watch as advertising companies try to wrap their minds around the paradigm shattering concept.

Already some light at the end of the tunnel is shinning;

Twitter may have become one of the most ubiquitous social media tools of our times, but it has been the least keen on generating profit, till now. Tweeter has started toying with inserting adds in users streams.

Google is dropping the sponsored links in favor of plain good old adds, rumor has it that its due to better conversion rates.  The buzzword for this whole issue seems to be R.O.I (Return Over Investment).

The real Twitter FailWhale? that would be its CEO

On a recent interview twitter s CEO Evan Williams admitted to various screw ups from which he says he has learned a lot, among the fails he counts;

late comer’s syndrome, causing power struggles between him and Jack Dorsey.

Failing to be assertive, just took him too long to too late when it comes to making  decisions.

Alienating coworkers; the guy never filled the necessary paperwork to grant his employees shares when they were about to sell blogger.

Are you talented for singing? Well you don’t have to be upfront of Simon Cowell to sing this time, all you have to do is go to MySpace.com/AmericanIdol and submit your video.

MySpace and American Idol are accepting videos from MySpace users that think they can sing, videos can not be longer than 40 seconds and I think you will not be accepted if you are over age 28? I don’t know, am not really much into American Idol even if I know one in person.

What I wonder is if this is more promotion for MySpace than “Singing Audition” for American Idol…

Anyway, here is Ryan Seacrest With his pitch:

American Idol Online Auditions Launches!

Even though Stephen Colbert was making fun of Social Networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare and services like Gmail. I must admit that he has few valid points as to how are we going to protect our identity. Even if you are not into social media at all, people will still post pictures of you on Facebook, upload videos on YouTube and things like that. Anyway checkout Stephen’s Colbert funny video of the week on Social Media.

Really trailers are needed for today’s social network sites? Already we all knew it well that most of the popular social networks as Facebook, Twitter and many more crowded very much. Millions of active members with these social networks is a clear indication of their popularity. But, still their promotional trailers are worth watching.

The recent Facebook Movie trailer was not a bad thing to watch and perhaps can create some interest too. Today, the best parody so far came out: from Next New Networks’ Indy Mogul we have the trailer to imagined Twitter movie:

Choice Quote: “If Twitter was as boring and useless as they say, then someone would have tweeted it”.

Last week was the trailer for the YouTube movies:

Choice quote: Chad Hurley threatens keyboard cat:”you were nothing before me. I made you”.

Before that, My Space trailer:

Choice quote: Tom Anderson on competition with Facebbok: “you think I’m not looking over my shoulder? I’m always looking over my f******ing shoulder”.

While we’re at it, the LOLcats trailer:

Choice quote: “I’m talking about taking every middle-aged cat lady’s craziest fantasies and putting them online”.

And here’s the real “The Social Network” Trailer:

TweetDeck an app presently had a mobile client for only the iPhone and the iPad. A beta Android version is going to be out tomorrow and it will be a great facility to follow friend’s tweets every time without causing disturbance to the other desktop clients. This is a best facility to interact with Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Foursquare and MySpace.

This beta version is not a final product and lots of important features that can make it complete are not yet implemented fully well in this version. However, worth giving it a try for every enthusiast that is already aware of the Tweetdeck.
This Android beta version of TweetDeck follows the original multiple format, with one update column onscreen at a time. Swiping to the side slides the adjacent column onto the display for interaction. Beta version got columns for Me, Home and Direct Messages and these three columns are enough for interactive tweeting.

This beta version for Android is holding limited functionality, but down the line it got a chance to get more useful functionalities through developer’s team. Most of the updates will see the light down the line in coming few weeks. TweetDeck designed for Android do not have a facility to remove network accounts and make it sure while adding a network account.

Background notification interval, some of the display settings and some more features are not available with this beat version. Most of the customization features may need to take back seat until the full version release.
Overall the beta version of TweetDeck for Android is stable, working fast and smooth too. It is is best useful app for comfortable tweeting with friends.

Flipboard, an app for Apple’s iPad today can turn all your Facebook, Twitter and other social network contents into a digital magazine. Flipboard was just launched in July. This is a free app to download. Company has kept a strict reservation system in downloading this free app through holding back new customers.

SOURCE: USATODAY.com

Mc. Cue, CEO, Flipboard said “A magazine is so much more beautiful than what’s online and content online still lives as if it’s the mid-1990’s. Flipboard idea was generated in the mind of Mr. Cue while he was on a flight with a stack of magazines and it has been a brainchild since after.

Flipboard gathers all the tweets and updates from your friends and other networks after registering with your credentials and presents them all as a magazine. In this, link suggestions will show up as article snippets interspersed with photos and comments from friends. To use this facility through Flipboard, the iPad need to be online. The next updated version will have a capability to save the information of the last visit and this saved information can be easily had through offline too. This new version might come into use by next week.

Customization is another biggest advantage with this Flipboard application and it will help to create your own magazine. The available nine categories on Flipboard can make this possible. Generally these categories will be in the form of Tech, Entertainment, World News, etc.

Flipboard is presently ad-free. But, Flipboard app capable to create digital “social” magazine and this can create a chance “talking tech videos” in it. Also, Mc.Cue said as “My goal is to create a new kind of medium that allows publishers to make more money from advertising online than they do today”.

Mobsters 2- Vendetta on Facebook_1257117162927Very good observation on social games like FarmVille, Mobsters or Sorority Life by good fella Michael Arrington and Founder of Techcrunch.

I like the fact that “he” wrote blog post otherwise I would expect blogs like Mashable to write about it.

Article explains pretty much in full why games like FarmVille, Mobsters, Sorority Life love to hurt our economy and it’s true.

I mean some people spend $50 (real money) on some “cash/points” yet they complain about the cell phone bill being high?

Anyway, go and read this article now.
