Research In Motion (RIM) has launched 5 new smartphones running on its new operating system ‘BlackBerry OS 7’. The new smartphones include three ‘Blackberry Torch’ models (two of which are complete touch phones) and two ‘Blackberry Bold’ models.

“This is the largest global launch of BlackBerry smartphones in our history,” was a statement made by RIM’s  president and co-CEO, Mike Lazardis. The phones bring along with them the good and the bad.

The good being that, the five new phones being launched will be coming out with many software and hardware improvements over the previous Blackberry models. The bad being, that despite the phone making drastic improvements, it is still not capable of competing with the growing Android and iOS market.

All the phones launched are somewhat high end and carry some good specs. All five of the devices have an improved processing speed with a 1.2GHz processor under the hood powering these devices. The smartphones have a high resolution display for quality viewing, and 768MB of RAM to maintain high speed of processing.

All the phones have a hefty on board memory of 8GB, which can be further extended up to 32 GB. Even a good camera of 5MP has been provided with features to support HD video recording, zoom and flash.

Standard connectivity features like WiFi and GPS are also provided. Integrated BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), Enterprise focus with the inclusion of both Documents To Go, as well as BlackBerry Balance are some of the other notable features of Blackberry’s new phones.

All the phones will now come with an improved browser that will provide users with a faster more fluid browsing experience (thanks to OS7). RIM has claimed its new OS to be 40 percent faster at browsing compared to OS6-based smartphones, and 100 percent faster than OS5 handsets.

Though the phones have made a significant leap, the phone is still incapable of competing with its major rivals like Apple inc. and other Android family smartphones. For example, new blackberry comes with a resolution 640×480 for 9810 and 800×480 for the Bold and Torch compared to 450×360 pixels on the previous Torch. But this is modest in front of Apple’s iPhone (960×640), Motorola Droid 3 (960×540), and the HTC Thunderbolt and Samsung Charge (800×480).

We will update you on the pricing and availability of these phones as soon as we receive an update on it.

BlackBerry Playbook Tablet which is made by RIM (Research in Motion) is going to be sold for under $500 said Jim Balsillie RIM’s yesterday in interview. BB Playbook tablet is expected to be released next year between January and March.

When Jim Balsillie was asked in interview if BlackBerry Playbook is going to be around $500 he said “No, it will be under that.” and no more comments were made.

The late September introduction of BlackBerry Playbook reveled that the tablet is going to have two cameras one on the front and one on the back. It should come with 1Ghz processor with 7 inch display, which is pretty same as Samsung Galaxy Tab that will be released in US next week.

I guess will have to wait until first quarter of 2011 to see what RIM has to offer, and I just hope it’s not going to be called “iPad Killer”

Dell is now on the way in marketing its own smartphones instead of BlackBerry and the move has started with its own employees.

Dell will give new Venue Pro Smartphones to its employees who carry BlackBerry. This step of the company would save about 25% of its mobile communications costs. It will in fact get rid of its BlackBerry servers, said the financial officer of Dell, Brian Gladden.

Dell currently figured out its 25,000 employees carry BlackBerry. It will provide these employees Venue Pro phones with voice as well as data plans. The other 71,000 employees of the company will get Dell phones with only voice plans.

According to the spokesman of the company, the process of replacing BlackBerry phone with its own brand will start soon and it will take few months to complete.

Venue Pro runs on Windows Phone 7 and it will be the first phone that is provided internally. It is also learned that Dell may also offer Android phones to its employees in future.

Currently, Dell has launched its first smartphone in the U.S. market, the Aero, based on Android.

This new step of promoting Dell smartphone is according to overall strategy of the company to carve bigger slice of the smartphone market. The internal move opens door for new services in convincing other businesses in using Dell smartphones instead of other devices. It is said that Dell would also start marketing of the new services to its business customers in near future. However, details of the new services are not yet disclosed by the company.

Blackberry smart phones are meant for the business traveler who needs to stay connected at all times. RIM is now adding a host of features to the existing models so that it is even more helpful to its users, and this will also pre-empt the release of the Motorola ES400. Enterprise users select a personal assistant on the basis of its ability to scan barcodes as well. Thus the Blackberry Torch 9800 was designed to support the barcode scanner API.

API or Application Programming Interface offers the host program to get access to numerous applications which will enhance its functionality and make other jobs more convenient. A typical example of this is the long list of applications on iPhone Apps which make the smart phone API highly successful. This reveals the phenomenal potential of the Blackberry API, which are additionally equipped with cameras. The cameras can be effectively used by developers to design features with multiple scanning options. The Torch 9800 is a higher pixel phone that can scan and decode 1D and 2D barcodes with ease, but these applications will necessitate the use of BarcodeScanner class and the barcode DecoderListener class by the developer. This is not difficult since the net.rim.evide.api.barcodelib package provides these features as a standard practice.

As the world of mobile technology invades the retail sector, the barcode scanning capability of mobile phones opens new avenues for both customers and retailers with individual one-to-one interaction. Customers will be able to compare products and brands within the store and beyond on the internet. They will be able to access customer reviews, product ratings and also find the lowest possible prices.

The API has yet to reach the main stream and have its potential fully realized by developers. Till that happens, it will be mainly enterprise PDAs that will have the ability to scan barcodes. Enterprise PDAs are used primarily in business in its various locations, be it the shop floor or the warehouse. The release of the Blackberry API will change this scenario since the gap between this smart phone and the enterprise PDA will reduce and prove to be a formidable competitor.

Some of the features that can be further developed in the Blackberry API include data storage, messenger, information manager, network connectivity, application integration, security features and GUI or Graphic User Interface. If these features are all combined into a smart phone, its potential and usage will improve considerably and place a powerful tool in the hands of the retailer. A glimpse of what lies ahead can be demonstrated with the following example:

Location based services of the GPS provide details about where you are and your destination, along with what lies on the route. If any of the store apps are active on the phone, it may be able to even send a message to the store revealing you current location, and the store in turn may try to tempt you to visit with some special discount or offer while you are still in the vicinity. The message may also include a barcode that is meant to give you a 10% discount on your purchases. Once you enter the store you inevitably pick up a number of other things. The retailer thus succeeds in getting more business and you as a customer are happy about having saved some money.

The fast moving world is dominated by the mobile concept which provides instant access to information available on the Internet. Companies like the manufacturers of the Blackberry are intensely aware of the potential ahead and that this is the key to their future success.

Great Expectations for Blackberry Torch Is Their Biggest Failure.

It is not bad to have a 150,000 units sold after three days since Blackberry Torch was launched. The real disappointment is how RIM “counts the chicken before they are fully hatched”! They’ve expected to match the sale of course of the iPhone.

RIM CEO Jim Balsillie described the unit as “a quantum leap over anything that’s out there.” A mysterious monolith display in AT&T stores that became mysterious what’s inside? They pushed the phone to the market in a wrong way, resulting to a disappointment that they cannot find a store that is sold out. Online retailers like Amazon sell the unit for $99 since its launch.

Compared with the iPhone 4 that uses iOS, Blackberry Torch has a 480×360-pixel 3.2-inch display and 624 MHz processor.  It has Wi-Fi and GPS capabilities, and while it has less internal storage (4GB) than the iPhone (16GB or 32GB), it has a microSD card slot that can expanded up to 32GB. The most obvious similarity is that they are both on the AT&T network.

To top it all off, the iPhone 4 A4 processor is also significantly more powerful than the one in the BlackBerry Torch, making the iPhone 4 more snappy and responsive and that I think it is the advantage of iPhone.
