Remember all the dilemma about the Facebook Privacy and stuff about half a year ago? Well it to quite after Facebook re-designed their code so you can straighten your privacy, but is your private information really private?

You have probably seen popup like the one in the picture below , when an application is requesting access to post stuff to your Facebook wall. Now you might see some extra text like:

“Current Address and Mobile Phone Number”

facebook app allow

That means that your address and mobile phone number will be shared with third party apps and some might not need that info but still can obtain if you click on “Allow” button.

So next time when you are about to hit Allow for some Facebook App consider reading the popup window bit more closely, and ask your self: Why does this app need my address and phone number?

Anyway, for more detailed info visit our friends at Naked Security.

Google and Facebook will have to tighten their hold on the personal information of their users. The European Union (EU) wants stronger privacy rules to allow Internet users much more control on the use of information about themselves provided to social-networking sites.

The EU officials said that, the new rules will be prepared next year after public consultations. These would overhaul 15-year-old laws. Benefits of … technology to individuals, businesses and public authorities must go hand-in-hand with the necessary respect for personal data," the European Commission was quoted in a statement. They also want more power to be given to data protection authorities in EU member states, revision of rules for privacy in police work and also to harmonize legislation across the 27-member bloc to cut red tape for businesses.

Companies such as Google Inc, Facebook, Microsoft and Yahoo collect a lot of information about the online habits of their users which they can then use to attract advertisers. This has led to increasing worries about web privacy issues. Britain is of the opinion that Google has breached UK law while collecting data for its Street view maps service by harvesting emails, Internet addresses and passwords. Italy, France, Germany, Spain and Canada are in the process of investigating the company on the same issue.

U.S. regulators ended their probe last week when Google addressed their concerns about EU commission forcing companies to comply with their demands.

Not only Facebook today released new android app but they also updated Privacy Control on Facebook Mobile page!

Now you can control and access your privacy from anywhere and any device that has browser by going to m.facebook.com/privacy

I think that is all fine and dandy but how often do you really change privacy controls on Facebook?

Don’t you hate sometimes when celebs get away with stuff just because they are celebs like Paris Hilton for example? Well Facebook isn’t fair either when it comes to Policy and Rules they set for “us” Facebook users.

So the other day I wanted to setup username for MWD Fan Page because I was tired at looking long url and I saw CNN has nice little cute Facebook Fan page www.facebook.com/CNN .

Well after trying to register facebook.com/MWD first I got pissed off because it requires 5 or more characters, second of all that pissed me even more is that I was not  able to send email to the right department. So I used DMCA violation form instead.

I sent them this:

Which rights infringed: No rights have been infringed I wasn’t able to contact any of you to set my username as 3 character word. MWD like CNN has it we would like to have MWD because site is called http://oclue.com
I didn’t know who I should or where I should write to so I am trying this form.
Here is the url
http://www.facebook.com/pages/MWD/149973098631
Please advise how we can get to 3 character word for facebook page because we really don’t want to set it as MWDFans or MWDBlog MWDNews etc.. CNN has CNN we would like MWD , thanks

This is what they replied to me:

Unfortunately, we will not be able to add the requested username to your account. Usernames can only contain alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9) or a period ("."), and must have five or more characters. Additionally, certain usernames may not be allowed if they are too generic (e.g., "pizza"). We apologize for the inconvenience.
If you would like, you can reply to this email with a valid variation of this username. We will review your request and add the username to your account if appropriate. If you have any further questions, please visit the username section of our Help Center at the following address:

I can so tell that ‘User Operations’ Rep. was so in the working mode and productive that all he/she (Won’t say who) did was copy and paste the script without I think even reading my request.

If Facebook set Policy and Rules for everyone same, why wouldn’t they applie those rules and policies to everyone equally? What’s the point of having them?

So I replied to the User Operations Rep. with this:

I understand what characters I can pick but the problem is "five or more" I mean can’t you make an exception or do I need to pay you guys to do it?
I mean rules are rules but unfortunately not for

http://www.facebook.com/nbc  = nbc.com
http://www.facebook.com/cnn  = cnn.com
http://www.facebook.com/att   = att.com

and why not
http://www.facebook.com/MWD = oclue.com ?
What is the point of "policy" if the policy is not same for everyone ?

So far I did not get any respond from Facebook as to why can’t I have MWD characters if this blog clearly is oclue.com ? I don’t want to register it as MWD Tech, MWD Blog, MWD News… I mean why would I? If NBC, CNN or ATT can have it why not the little guy ? Right?

Anyway folks, MWD has almost reached 500k pageviews per month and I bet few hundreds of you are going to read this. So to help spread the word around and my voice of opinion, please either like this post, retweet this post or use buttons below to share via other social networks.

Thanks you, and help us get MWD that is http://facebook.com/MWD :)

Update:

This is what I got today:

At this time we are only allowing people to register usernames that contain five characters or more. If someone has a username that is shorter than five characters, it is because they have a business relationship with us.

My Replay:

Just saying its un-ethical. Put your self in my position. Anyway, I am sure you guys can make an exception but that’s fine…. It just shows me how people are in this world.
Thanks for help?

Sincerely,
@joehobot
