For new iPhone 4 owners and iPhone 3GS and 3G owners who had previously been put off by the software-based jailbreak process pioneered by the Dev-Team, last week’s debut of Jailbreakme.com provided an easy opportunity to complete the process in an Over-the-Air (OTA) manner. Many adventurous souls who tried it quickly found out that third-party repositories such as Cydia and Rock provided access to a treasure trove of previously unimaginable tweaks, themes, and apps.

Of course, they were also made aware of the fact that Apple views jailbreaking as a warranty-voider. Nonetheless, they deemed the benefits worth the risk. This morning, though, veteran jailbreakers saw news that, to them, is all too familiar. If a USA Today report published today is correct, though, jailbreakers who allow iTunes to update their iPhones when the impending release version hits Apple’s servers may find that all of their newfound fun quickly disappears.

Apple said about the signal problem:

“discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars” and that it was surprised and stunned that “that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong.”

Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

iPhone 3G looks like has quite some issues with iOS4 upgrade on top of that background change is not allowed. Well Steve Jobs has quick answer for you.

Here is what Erica asked Steve:

Hey Steve! I just upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4 and was really looking forward to setting a background on my home screen. Guess that’s not happening, but I’d like to know why.

See, I get why you don’t include multitasking. My iPhone gets pretty hot when certain apps run, couldn’t imagine how multitasking would fry my phone.

But the background thing, I don’t see how that would be memory intensive and/or battery draining. It doesn’t seem like that feature needs to be exclusive to the 3GS and 4G.

I hope this email finds you in good health.

Erica

This is what Steve Jobs replied to her:

The icon animation with backgrounds didn’t perform well enough.

Now you know! Thanks to Rosa

March 23, 2010 – This morning, the internet is abuzz with the news that an internal Apple (AAPL) document proves the iPhone is available for purchase, without the requirement to enter into an immediate contract with the smartphone’s exclusive carrier, AT&T (ATT). According to a document obtained and posted by the tech news website, Gizmodo, customers will be able to purchase one iPhone per day, without showing identification (You know. For the universal iPhone owner database.) or signing a painful contract with AT&T.

Since its initial release, customers were only able to purchase an iPhone if they entered into a contract with AT&T for cellular service. For many, this was tantamount to totalitarianism, since it was obviously aimed at preventing consumers from buying iPhones and jailbreaking them for use on other SIM-enabled carriers, like T-Mobile. If an iPhone just magically appeared in your hand, AT&T wouldn’t refuse to activate it and would certainly let you sign a contract with them in order to activate it, so it isn’t plausible that the purpose was really to prevent the black-market sale of the world’s number one smartphone.

March 12, 2010 – Tweetie 2, from atebits, is no newcomer to the iPhone Twitter application club. Since its original release, as Tweetie, it has grown to be one of the most downloaded Twitter clients in the Apple App Store, with a 4 out of 5 star rating. Combining useful features from across the Twitter client apps, its popularity quickly skyrocketed. The intuitively designed interface and feature-packed functionality resulted in it being named as an Apple Design Award Winner, in 2009. What’s so special about it, when compared to the rest of the crowded Twitter client app market? To this end, what are the new features added in the March 11, 2010 update to Tweetie 2?

March 5, 2010 – According to a Wall Street Journal article, Sony Corporation is currently planning to release a line of products to compete for a share of the Apple-dominated smartphone market. The word is that they are working on a smartphone that can support the downloading and playing of video games. Additionally, it seems they may be working on a device that includes netbook, e-reader, and gaming functionality. It seems that both of these unconfirmed devices would also take advantage of the company’s online media platform. Another potential competitor for Apple’s iTunes Store, it is slated to open before April 2010.
