iOS 4.3.4 available now, solves PDF vulnerability, disables jailbreak but another unlocking tool out

Apple has released a new version of iOS, which is iOS 4.3.4 (and 4.2.9 in the case of Verizon iPhone). With the help of this version, the vulnerability regarding the malicious PDF files corrupting the system is removed. Apple implies that a fix is being applied, which will prevent the execution of arbitrary code when crafted PDF is opened on your device but there is a catch, before you decide to update your iPhone with this latest version of iOS remember that your jailbreak won’t work any further.

The new iOS update is now available for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 which are running on iOS 3.0 or higher, on 3rd generation iPods (running on iOS 3.1 or higher), and iPads with iOS 3.2 or higher. Apple’s iOS 4.3.4 update has fixed the vulnerability in the CoreGraphics framework, which created problems relating to the way PDF files were handled. Hackers could have remote controlled the iDevices after tricking the user into opening a malicious PDF file. The flaw was first uncovered by ‘Comex’ , member of a hacking team as named by iPhone Dev team. ‘Comex’ using this flaw created a loophole to jailbreak the iOS.

The update targets three components of the iOS: buffer overflow in Free Type’s handling of True Type fonts; signature issue in Free Type’s handling of Type1 fonts; and invalid type conversion issue in use of IOMobile Frame Buffer queuing primitives. ‘Comex’ had earlier brought out ‘JailbreakMe 2.0’ aimed at iPhone 4. Apple prevented the hack by launching another similar iOS update (4.3.3 update).

For all the Jailbreak fans who are disappointed at the latest update of the iOS need not do so. Just after 12 hours of the release, a poster appeared at the Redmond Pie which claims to have certain ‘PwnageTool 4.3.3’ a bundle that will unlock your iDevice. Google+ iOS Edition

Ever since Facebook became a deca-billion dollar construct, spawning companies which are worth billions of dollars in their own right (Zynga), there have been many attempts to dethrone this almighty social networking juggernaut. As we all know by now, Google+ is the Californian based company’s social network foray into the basically monopolized market. I’m not going into specifics here, but it basically looks like… Facebook, except, it’s not Facebook.

That’s not the point though. Currently, Google has just posted a Google+ application to the app store. It’s pending approval currently, while no approval process was necessary for the Android marketplace, for obvious reasons. Other information confirmed by Google, is that the application is not only for iPhones, iPod and iPad users can rejoice that they haven’t been forgotten by the search engine superpower.

Google is also releasing an Application Programming Interface for Google+, which will allow developers to create applications for Google+. Allowing software to interact with the service, as well as people, this API will certainly provide a greater amount of flexibility for users to exploit.

A couple of screenshots exhibit the features of Google+, including the much touted ‘Circles’ feature, where you can direct messages, and view messages only from particular social groups. There is also integration with Gmail, and GoogleTalk- perhaps a nice selling point about the social network in general.

Syncing iPhone via WiFi with iTunes 10.5 Is Nice Feature

At WWDC Stevie mentioned that with iOS 5 you will be able to sync your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch via WiFi but what he forgot to mention is that currently iOS 5 does not allow you to sync your iDevices over WiFi.

The Wifi Syncing feature for iPhone iPad and iPod Touch will be probably enabled soon but as of right now, if you are developer don’t waist too much time figuring out on how to do this.

As you can see in the picture below, Sync button is grayed out on my iPhone 4 (iOS 5) but if you connect it via USB cable sync works just fine.

Well I guess you will either have to wait until this feature is enabled for iOS 5 developers or until iOS 5 release date is announced.

Switching from Black iPhone 4 to White iPhone 4 Not Worth It

When most people are speculating whether the iPhone 5 is going to come out, well somebody yet again had to mention “white iphone” and that somebody was journalist from wall street journal named Ian Sherr.

Apple has confirmed on multiple occasions that white iPhone will be out this Spring season, and reason for it’s delay (10 months ago) was the color it self. The problem Apple faced was that front frame did not match the color of the button at the bottom, basically company that designs white iPhone front design had to redesign the frame and do some more color tweaking in order to put white iPhone into production.

Now, according to multiple sources including Wall Street Jorunal and Bloomberg we should be seeing white iPhone coming out shortly even possible by end of this month, and to be honest I so dislike the way Apple releases their products, here is why:

Apple tends to keep the lines at Apple stores each month and PR people busy.  iPad 2 just came out on March 11th and there are still few people waiting in line even today! I am serious! Even month after iPad 2 came out, people are still waiting in line at 7am, and I live in smaller city (Des Moines,Iowa).

Lets take a look at the timeline and some product predictions for Apple this year:

January: Apple announcement of iPhone 4 on Verizon

February: Apple releases iPhone 4 on Verizon

March: iPad 2 Release

April: White iPhone 4 release (prediction)

May: Announcement of  Apple Event for June/July

June-July: iPhone 5 Release (prediction)

October-September: iOS updgrade (prediction)

If you look at the time line above, to me that sounds ridiculous. Sure, its cool for Apple product promotions, but what about those people that get gadget outdated within 4-5 months? Not that I would ever buy white iPhone 4 or even iPhone 5 but those people that wanted one are now under two year agreement from wireless carriers, which means that even if they wanted to switch from black iPhone 4 to white iPhone 4 they will have to pay early termination fee of ca.  $250 and then $35 activation fee, and that to me dear friends is not worth it.

Anyway,

I started rambling here:but would like to know what you think about Apple products and whether the timeline above is just made for PR reasons?

As a tech guy who has been in tech industry for over a decade now, I am always in  different places doing some sort of web-development and most of my time I spend remoting into my servers whether that is from home or some other place.

Now that technology has advanced, I can remote to my web servers and home pc’s straight from iPad 2 and iPhone 4 which I recently got for birthday (April 1st!). Today I would like to introduce you to one of the best remote applications for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch basically any iDevice that runs on iOS 3+  and that app name is Remoter.

I downloaded bunch of remote apps for my iPad 2 and waisted my money so to say, but with Remoter everything paid it self off.

Remoter (Remoter: Remote Desktop VNC – iTunes Link) application allows you to remote into ANY operating system that has VNC (I use TightVNC) or SSH.

With SSH (I am more of a linux guy) you can do pretty much everything you would do on any linux machine, it gives you all the controls that you could possibly use as you would be upfront of that PC.

Same thing goes with Windows and OS X , as I said above you can remote to any operating system, and use it just like you would use it when you are upfront of that computer.

64GB iPhone 4 Pictures and Video Leaked (iPhone 5)

iPhone 4 is now out on Verizon and AT&T featuring 16GB and 32GB sizes, but what about 64GB? Pictures and video of iPhone 4 64GB as of today are leaked thanks to MicGadget.

As you can see below it is a iPhone 4 64GB prototype just like the one Gizmodo leaked 3 months before it came out. According to MicGadget the iPhone 4 64GB prototype was leaked out of Shenzhen FoxConn factory which is THE factory where all iPhone’s are made. They also reported that this particular iPhone 4 prototype is on sale for $1700.

I am not 100% sure if I would buy one of the prototypes because of multiple reasons

1. No warranty

2. Software Update? Possible or not?

3. Which carrier can be used with? Will it only have 3G or just Edge?

I mean when you pay $1700  for that type of phone, it better be something good, but just due to the size change of 32GB in my honest opinion, it is not worth paying.

iPhone 4 or in this case iPhone 5 for me personally would have to be really a major upgrade from what we have seen so far.

Our predictions are that next iPhone 5 will include:

  1. Dual Core Processor – like iPad 2
  2. 4GB capability
  3. 64GB Size (Duh)
  4. Same price as current iPhone 4 just replace 32GB with 64GB
  5. 8MP rare camera – I might be pushing on this one but Motorola Droid has it for a year now!
  6. 2MP front camera

You Should See Personal Hotspot on iPhone 4 (Verizon)

Yesterday while at work, I got popup on my iPhone 4 (Verizon) saying “Carrier Update, Update, Not Now”  and as it appears the Personal Hotspot has been added to my iPhone 4 where before I do not recall having it. This update I think should of come as part of iOS 4.3 next week but I guess it came up now.

Here are some of the screenshots I got for you:

Basically the personal hotspot will transfer your 3G data into Wifi adhoc station, so you can then connect 5 devices to that Wifi. So far Verizon is charging $20 for tethering which is basically same as using the 3G data (personal hotspot)

But hopefully Apple will get away with it as they promote a new photo editing application; iMovie. The camera also has optional high dynamic range setting that will enable user to capture more detailed picture. Along with the 5 megapixels back side camera the phone has an integrated front facing camera for video conferences and self portraits. Self portraits have become very popular, so that’s one thing new users can dig about the device.

The biggest advantage of the newest iOS operating system is that it now allows multi tasking, meaning users can fire up multiple application at the same time. The battery life of the phone has also improved noticeably.
