I just got back from surgery a week ago and I used  few application on my iPad and iPhone that were amusing me while I was in pain and bored from not doing some other activities.

Dragon Dictation logo and iphone appZite app for ipadNetflix app for iPhone and iPad

These are iPhone and iPad apps I use when I get bored:

Application called Dragon Dictation is the best application I could’ve ever downloaded, reason why I am saying that is because I had surgery on my right arm and wasn’t able to type as fast as I could before the surgery. Dragon Dictation converts the speech to text , I think it does awesome job because I was able to write this article so far without any mistakes or constant repeats. Dictation allows you to copy the text, save the text and as well as post the text to Facebook or Twitter automatically. Friend of mine told me that he is using Dragon Dictation to write text messages while driving, he says he’s more focused on the road and he is able to just copy and paste the text into text message and send it away in 1 second.

Another app that I use is called Zite but unfortunately its only available for iPad right now, hope that Zite for iPhone is going to release soon. I really love that application because it gives me the latest information around newsthat I am concerned about, news that I am interested in, and also it gives me ability to share the links on my Instagram account, Facebook or Twitter.

Flipboard is another cool application but only for iPad, Flipboard app for iPhone has been not been released yet. Flipboard allows you to read RSS feeds from Google Reader, read and update twitter feeds as well as Facebook status update.

Not too long ago I downloaded app called Note Plus, Note Plus allows you to use your stylus on iPad and write just like you would write things on a piece of paper. I reviewed many stylus applications, Note Plus I think its the best stylus app I came across and tested so far.

Netflix app is cool but have you heard of application called Crackle? Well if you haven’t, Crackle is quite good application to watch movies, shows and things like that. Crackle does have a lot of similarity to Hulu Plus, but guess what Crackle is free, does have advertising videos, but they only last for 5 to 15 seconds from what I have seen so far.

You must’ve wondered if I played any games? Yes I did.I played games such as Let’s Golf, Frisbee, Falling Fred and Snooker Club (pool game). As I said above I am currently one handed, so I have to play games that allow me to do so.

Hope you like the app collection above and not get bored so easily with them.

What iPhone and iPad apps do you use when you get bored?

With all of the new and VERY complicated smartphones and tablets, productivity apps have become immensely popular and useful for the average smartphone owner. However, many people don’t know much about the top productivity applications

Productivity can be interpreted differently by different people. It’s direct definition is “the quality of being productive or having the power to produce” which overall, basically means the ability to get things done quickly and stress-free. Here are the top 5 productivity applications for iOS and Android smartphones and a brief summary of each.

iOS  Productivity Apps

1. Tips & Tricks – iPhone Secrets

This $0.99 application is mainly directed towards those iPhone users that aren’t very tech savvy or have never owned an iPhone before. It is essential information in over 120 written tips and free updates with each revision of iOS. The great thing about this app is they keep it new and current. Some of the tips are advanced ones that you would not find on your own.

2. Flashlight

This is the #1 free productivity app store application. It is the most basic, easy to use flashlight that uses the LED flash to its fullest ability. The only downside to this app is that it can burn up your battery if the flashlight is turned on for too long. Strobe/Blinking mode is also supported and best of all its free.

3. JotNot Scanner Pro

Out of all of these applications JotNot Scanner is my favorite. This $0.99 app gives you the ability to scan and save documents, receipts, whiteboards and more all from your iPhone! However, this is not like a photo app at all. It makes your photo a clear black and white document, but you can also have the picture in color. Overall, this app is very useful and can help anyone out that wants to keep and save documents easily.

4. Week Calendar

This $1.99 application is pretty much a better and more equipped version of iCal for your iPhone or iPod touch. Week Calendar provides a calendar overview with a better day, week, and month overview. This application is directed towards the type of people that need to keep track of what they’re doing and when they are doing it.

5. iTranslate ~ the free translator

iTranslate is the best Universal Translator on the App Store today. It includes over 50 languages, Voice recognition, Conversation Mode, 18 free voices, Dictionaries, save & copy, and Landscape mode. Whether you’re doing your language homework in school or just wondering what a certain word or phrase means this is the app for you! Best of all its free!

This app is just $3.97 and Root Explorer is the ultimate file manager for root users. Access the whole of android’s file system (including the elusive data folder!). Additional features include SQLite database viewer, Text Editor, create and extract zip or tar/gzip files, multi-select, and many more!

2. Swift Key

SwiftKey is a great $1.99 application for anyone look for an easier to type on keyboard. From the Android Store “SwiftKey Keyboard uses AI technology to make typing smart, fast and personal.” This app is innovative, useful, and very easy to use.

3. ADWLauncher EX

ADWLauncher EX is an awesome way to tweak your phone without any rooting or hacking needed. Just $3.35 to tweak your Android desktop. It comes with hundreds of themes, Icons editor to create your own customized shortcuts, and a customizable main dock. ADWLauncher EX is different from ADW.Launcher in that it has a lot of new additions and improvements.

4. ezPDF Reader

ezPDF Reader is a simple, $0.99 app that basically is a PDF Reader! One addition is that it plays both video and audio. One cool thing you can do with this app is called Freehand draw. It says to just long click on the screen to activate and you can change the color and thickness of the line. Pretty cool, right?

5. JuiceDefender Ultimate

Last but certainly not least is JuiceDefender Pro. This app is kind of pricy at $5.09 but still seems like a very great application for those that are having batter problems. It gives you “Absolute control over your battery” and includes wifi control, 2G/3G control and many more!

All 10 of these apps are great productivity apps for many different types of people on two different platforms.

Having website up and running these days is easy but keeping the uptime to 99% is hard. This iPhone app which monitors websites and servers can help you and let you know a lot about your website.

Basically its an iPhone app (yes there is web interface for it to) that checks on your website constantly if its up and running. Best thing about it is that it also notifies you via SMS messages if the website is down!

Since I just sign up with the service I can only share the images below that are pretty much empty but for more info head over to Apple iTunes you going to this link or just search for “Pingdom”

A recent review that was published a report on iPhone security revealed an important note. Most of the third-party software available for iOS-based devices transmits an accompanying unencrypted unique device identifier, and this could offer chances to retrieve personal information of the phone user.

The security review also mentioned that the top free and most popular categories on the iPhone App store were observed to be having chance to transmit UDIDs from device. Almost 68% of the mentions apps are currently having this chance of security issue. Another important this is that the 18% of apps encrypted their communications, so it could not be determined what kind of data is being shared.

The security review was published last week by Eric Smith, network administrator with Bucknell University and two-time DefCon wardriving champion.

The review was conducted on 57 apps that are available for iPhone and determined that the personal information was sent out in plain text, posing a potential security concern.

Here, this UDID is a unique identifier and this will be assigned to each iOS device and this includes iPhone, iPad and iPod Touches. In fact, this number is derived to control piracy with software available on the App Store.

The security review conducted by Smith compared UDID assigned to iOS to the controversial processor serial number that Intel attached to its Pentium 3 chips. The observations revealed that the Pentium 3 PSN “elicited storm of outrage from privacy groups”, and this is questioning why those concerns have not been expressed with the iPhone.

These privacy issues were witnessed with few of the popular apps as Amazon, Chase Bank, Target, and Sam Club. Here, The CBS News app gone little further and transmitting the UDID along with the user-assigned name for the iPhone, which typically includes the owner’s real name.

Smith wrote in his review as “Most iPhone application vendors are collecting and remotely storing UDID data, and some of these vendors also have the ability to correlate UDID to a real-world identity. For example, Amazon’s application communicates the logged-in user’s real name in plain text, along with the UDID, permitting both Amazon.com and network eavesdropper to easily match a phone’s UDID with the name of the phone’s owner”.

Here, we should remember that Apple has been very up front with security on iOS, requiring that users approve when applications access information like GPS or the phone’s address book. In addition, the company has also allowed user to opt out of data collection with services like iAds.

The company even called out one mobile analytics firm, after data about the iPad was obtained from devices in testing on Apple’s Cupertino, Calif, Campus without the company knowing. The incident prompted Apple to revise some of the rules in its iPhone Developers Agreement.
