Not too long ago I started testing  Windows 2008 server and see how applications that I use on Windows Servers behave. As soon as I got the W2k8 up and running there was two things I noticed and that bothered me quite a bit.

Windows 2008 Server Login Screen

Img Credit:Crunchgear.com

One was that server response was very slow when I opened console in VMware, so slow that  it took me almost a minute to click on My Computer, C drive and go to Program files , even though server had few CPU’s and few GB of memory assigned. I mean Windows 2003 and other servers were just fine, so after bit of a digging around VMWare Forums I found one solution that fixed Windows 2008 running slow on VMWare.

Here is how I fixed it:

Go to

C:\Program Files\Common Files\ Drivers\wddm_video\

If you have those folders, that means that Virtual Drivers are installed on W2k8 server if you don’t, please install it before you proceed.

I am assuming you are familiar with the Windows enough and know where Device Manager is? Well go to Device Manager, find your Video Card under Display.

Right Click and Click Properties. Then go to Driver Tab and click Update Driver…

Window will popup asking you if you want the driver isntalled automatically or you can chose the installation folder. Go with the option 2.

Click on Browse and point it to the location we talked about above and click next.Windows 2008 Server should find the video card drivers and install them. After you are done with installing the drivers, please reboot the VMware instance.

That solved my problem with Windows 2008 servers being slow on VMware , I hope it will solve yours too.

Second issue I faced, which unfortunately I have not yet been able to resolve is the RDP session being slow on Windows 2008 Server.  When I open VMware console W2k8 server is acting ok, no delays whatsoever, but when I use RDP to connect to W2k8 server, omg that thing runs like Windows 98 on 133mhz and 32GB ram! Not kidding…

Am actually writing this article in hope that some of you W2k8 experts might be able to solve this 2nd issue  of mine and share some information in commenting section below, as to what I  can do to speed Windows 2008 server RDP session up.

If you had chance to play with Wk28 , like it? Hate it? Sucks? Love it?

I bet money many of new iPhone 4 users will encounter iPhone 4 WiFi (Wireless) issues. Well I am here to help you a bit with those iPhone  4 WiFi problems.

First, if your connection is secured than you should follow these iPhone 4 WiFi steps first:

1. Go to Settings

2. Go to WiFi

3. Click on Your Wireless

4. Punch in your WEP key

5. Connect to it.

Still have issues with your iPhone 4 WiFi ?

Unplug from power from: Modem, Router (Shut down Pc’s / Mac’s if you can or want to).

Wait about 1 minute, plug-in power back to your modem  wait about 30 seconds, then plugin power on your router , and redo the steps above (skip step 4 if your network is not secured)

If you still have issues, possible problem is that your router has MAC filtering turned on , which basically blocks all devices that MAC addresses are not added. So you might want to check that. If you get 169.x.x.x iP possible chance is that you are not getting an IP from your router, in that  case please do shut down ALL your devices down modem, router, pc’s …repeat the steps above but turn try connecting with iPhone first before you turn on any pc’s/Mac’s.

iPhone 4 WiFi Visual Troubleshooting

forget network on iPhone 4

In picture above you can clearly see that My router is better than yours, but lets troubleshoot this visually, shall we ?

Make sure that your Wi-Fi says ON (blue top line), If you have lock like I pointed out above, you will have to supply correct wifi key also known as passphrase from your router.  Red line shows you how strong the signal is. The red circle shows my iPhone 4 has check-mark which means I am connected to my wi-fi.

what is release renew on iPhone 4 wifi

Have you tried to release and renew on your iPhone? If you have not done that, please do. See if you get an IP address other than 169.x.x.x . The release renew button will do what it says, it releases your network connectivity and renews it.

what isforget network on iPhone 4 wifi

Forget this network can be found on top of your wi-fi network setting. Forget this network will probably be my last step which yours should be too.  Forget this network will remove your connection from router, if you do that, please go back click where the arrows show you to click, that will re-authenticate your connection to your wireless router.

I checked Apple iPad Discussion Boards and saw many WiFi related questions. So I thought this is not a trick but is a tip on how to connect your iPad to WiFi for wireless connection.

To connect to a secure wireless connection on the iPad:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Go to WiFi
  3. Select the wireless connection that you wish to connect to.
  4. Enter your WEP or WPA (password) key
  5. Connect to it.

To connect to an unsecured wireless connection (usually public) on the iPad:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Go to WiFi
  3. Select the wireless connection that you wish to connect to.
  4. Connect to it.

iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad have similar settings. See the tutorial on how to fix WiFi connection issues in this post just replace iPod Touch word with iPad.

Well we hope this post is going to help you get online with iPad.

Also these are some good tutorials to follow as well.

Just recently I got PS3 and first thing I had bit problems with is Wi-Fi Connectivity so here is How To Troubleshoot PS3 or PS2 Wi-Fi Connectivity.

I use to work as network engineer for 7th largest ISP in USA, so things like this are fun for me, but for those that are bit unfamiliar how to set things up on router or Wi-Fi enabled devices is no fun at all.

Let’s start:

My PC/Mac is connected via Wi-Fi but my PS2-3 Is not :(

Well there is many possibilities that could get wrong.

A. Check your router for Mac Filtering (This is most common thing people forget about. It’s feature that allows only Wi-Fi devices which MAC Address has been permitted.) To get your Mac just go to Settings/System Info it should be 12 character long something like 12:AB:2C:……

B.Did you enter your WEP/ WPA/WPA2 correctly in PSx? Sometimes getting 13-26 characters is hard to enter it correctly.

C. Got 169.x.x.x IP? Try restarting your Modem-Router and than restart your PS2/PS3 most likely you timed out because 169. is Microsoft’s default IP address.
Instead of going more into details of every single connectivity problem possibility, leave a comment on this post and I’ll get back to you asap how does that sound?

Very good long post about troubleshooting Wi-Fi on PS3 can be found at this link

New iPod Touch generation is coming and I bet money lot of you have problems with iPod Touch Wi-Fi or even iPhone. Troubleshooting iPod Touch or iPhone isn’t easy but that’s why you have guy’s like me that own those devices and on top of that Networking is what they have been doing for life.

Alright let’s get started with troubleshooting iPod Touch and iPhone at the same time! (This is quick but long tutorial)

First ask your self “Did I ever tried to connect to my WiFi network?” If Yes , read further if Not…um why don’t you try that first!

There is few things you can do before we go to the real stuff.
1.I want you to Unplug the power from Modem, Your WiFi Router and shut off your iPod Touch. Now wait 30 seconds!. Turn back your Modem first, wait 1 minute, turn on your WiFi Router , wait 1 minute and then turn on your iPod Touch.

Connected? (If not go read some more stuff down below)

2.If you have encrypted connection something like WPA or WEP do the following:
1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Wi-FI
3. Click on Your Wireless
4. Punch in your WEP key
5. Connect to it.
(If you don't know your WEP, WPA key please refer to router guides how to get it)

Connected? (If not go read some more stuff down below)

If none of the above did not help there is also another alternative wih adding DNS service, because sometimes iPod Touch does not get DNS server response so it’s kind of like stuck in the mud and not moving forward.

1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Wi-Fi
3. Click on Your Wireless Network
4. Click on Static
5. Enter DNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
(This helped in most cases)

Still having issue?

5. Go check your router settings and make sure MAC FILTERING is OFF and add your iPod Touch MAC address to the table (This will authorize your iPod Touch/ iPhone to connect to your wireless)

Alright if you still have issues , have you tried connecting to any other WiFi other than your Home or Office? If not please do so. About 5% of people had to go to Apple store and exchange their iPod Touch because WiFi was broken.

There is bit more troubleshooting I can offer, please comment below and ill be happy to help you.
